Are we 'real' online? Posted on 12 Feb 2008
No, our on-line identities are a fictional creation of who we would like to be. This is for some not all people. Those who are comfortable with who they are in real life; tend to moderately remain the same. Others, however, who have a negative life, may “live on-line” as how they wish to be. A negative consequence could be the idea, you are a “super hero” on the internet but as soon as you ‘shut down’ you know longer have those powers. For example, Mike was a great hacker but in real life was a tall, skinny student who got beat up and bullied at school. Go figure?

I feel that on-line is a fictional reality for those who desire such a place. As for it being REAL, personally, I would say no. This question is debatable because I feel it’s not a real place; but on the other hand, there are some people out there who live to be on-line.

Are we alone? Posted on 12 Feb 2008
I also agree with Tara, that children should not be left alone on the internet. The question should be “would you leave your child with a bunch of strangers?” The internet may be accessible from your home but we do not have the control of who is accessing the internet outside our homes. Children (as we all did) enjoy our privacy but using the chat on-lines doesn’t guarantee that your talking that person nor does it guarantee that it’s private. For example, Jane thinks she is talking to her friend; when he begins disrespecting her and using vulgar language. She finds out the next day; someone had his information.

I believe that the internet is moderately private depending what you access or use it for. If you happen to be a target of a Hacker; then you’re screwed. If you allow your children to access the internet with supervision then cyber-bullying etc., has less chance of happening.

I feel that the internet service providers are keeping logs of all the internet transactions you make on the internet. These can be accessed by the governments’ and the police. Anyone with the knowledge and ability to “hack” into computers/firewalls can watch what you do on your computer. Ask yourself, what would you be willingly to show the world, and then decide what you want to do on your computer.

Education and Technology Posted on 31 Jan 2008
I feel that education and technology go hand in hand providing that the educational objectives are maintained when using technology. There are times that technology has been misused, as class fillers, which may not serve a proper purpose.

I do believe that eventually, computers will take over more of the actual classroom exercises that we use and they will fill our schools, if they haven’t already. For example, Smartboard can be used as a tool to keep children interested in learning. If you were doing a math lesson on angles; what a great opportunity to use the Smartboard. It gives the children a larger view of what is going on; it allows the children to try which gets them acquainted with technology. Another example, using audio tools with computers would enhance a Migmag Language lesson. It would allow the children to learn together with the Teacher in the classroom and allow them to learn on their own (through an activated lesson).
